37 Animals With Such Unusual Color Mutations That They Don’t Even Look Real

Each and every day, new species of animals are discovered, and they’re all unique in their own way. Sometimes, though, rare genetic variations can make even the most familiar animals look like entirely new creatures to us! A little change can make a huge difference.

Most people know about color mutations like albinism, but fewer are familiar with variations like piebaldism and erythrism, which create their own beautiful variations in an animal’s coloring. Here we’ve gathered some of the most beautiful animals whose odd colors show off nature’s entire spectrum!

    1. These deer have piebaldism, a rare mutation that makes them appear partially albino.

    2. Here’s an example of a piebald python. Something about the white spaces seems menacing…

    3. This rare, beautiful beast is a blonde elk. It’s not an albino, it just has lighter fur, sort of like blonde versus brown hair!

    4. It’s incredible how this bicolored peacock’s feather pattern seems to be split right down the middle!

    5. If you saw a blue lobster in the tank at a seafood restaurant, would you eat it?

    6. This badger on the right has erythrism, which means his fur has a reddish tint due to a genetic mutation.

    7. This erythristic jackal would normally have black fur on its back!

    8. This adorable rottweiler has a condition called vitiligo. He was born with normal pigmentation, but the over the years, the melanocyte cells which color his fur have lost their ability to function properly.

    9. Most animals with albinism appear white, but genetic differences from land animals mean that albino dolphins appear pink!

    10. The amount of black fur on this tiger suggests one of its parents was an incredibly rare all-black tiger.

    11. This cuddly fella is the world’s only brown panda!

    12. Zebra foals are born with brown stripes, but as they get older they grow into the more familiar black-and-white pattern.

    13. An unusual genetic variation means that this zebra actually has some spots to go along with his stripes!

    14. Meet Venus, a chimera cat. Chimeric animals occur when two fertilized eggs combine in the womb. This basically means two twins fuse together to form a single creature. Weird, huh?

    15. This parakeet is a chimera as well, and it’s absolutely beautiful!

    16. This chimeric lobster looks like a good and an evil twin combined into one…

    17. This precious bunny is a chimera, too!

    18. Macaws with only one pigment are extremely rare.

    19. You don’t see too many blonde mongooses, but this guy is pretty cute.

    20. It’s probably tough to be this orange alligator, since he doesn’t have his natural camouflaging colors.

    21. This “strawberry” leopard is the only one of its kind ever spotted!

    22. This pink grasshopper looks like it could be a Pokemon!

    23. These pink katydids have erythrism. Sadly, most of these beautiful bugs don’t live very long since they’re so visible to predators.

    24. This piebald squirrel could be mistaken for a skunk if you weren’t looking closely!

    25. This leopard with extremely pronounced spots was sighted in India, but scientists aren’t sure what kind of mutation makes it look this way.

    26. This virtually spotless cheetah is the only one of its kind ever photographed.

    27. This squirrel has partial melanism, which means he’s overly pigmented compared to the rest of his species.

    28. This little guy has a mirror-image form of partial melanism!

    29. This piebald moose doesn’t seem thrilled to have been caught on camera!

    30. What an adorable piebald fox cub!

    31. Believe it or not, this picture isn’t edited! Pelusa the polar bear was treated for a skin condition at an Argentinian zoo and turned completely purple.

    32. At Meoncross School in Hampshire, England, students caught this incredible purple squirrel, and scientists aren’t sure what causes his crazy coloration.

    33. This photo captures the different genetic variations of tigers. A “normal” tiger is surrounded by a golden tiger, which is white with orange stripes, a white tiger, which is white with black stripes, and a rare stripeless tiger.

    34. This two-toned cardinal is a “bilateral gynandromorph.” Because of a mutation, after the egg’s first cell division, one resulting cell became male and the other became female. That means this bird is male on one half of his body and female on the other!

    35.  This piebald raven is stunning.

    36. It looks almost like a killer whale at first, but this is a piebald Commerson’s dolphin, which is also known as panda dolphin.

    37. King cheetahs have a very distinct fur pattern that’s caused by a rare genetic mutation. Researchers had reported them since 1920s, but it wasn’t until 1974 that someone finally got a picture of one.

Wow…I never knew animals like these existed! I think the purple polar bear blew my mind most of all!
