Ducklings hatch around this time of year, and within 24 hours, their mother leads them to water.
Unfortunately, where she nests isn’t necessarily very close to any body of water, like a pond or a river.
Human activity can endanger the babies: pedestrians and motorists who don’t see them in their way can trample them, if the family finds itself on the road, much like the way this one did. The mama duck and her 12 little ones faced a potentially perilous journey to the nearby South Saskatchewan River.

But luckily, two officers from the Saskatoon Police Service bike unit noticed them, and decided to lend a helping hand. With their bikes, they flanked the lined-up ducks until they safely reached their destination.
