The nervous dog, named Smiley, was surrendered to a crowded shelter in Brooklyn, New York. The dog was betrayed by his family and then placed on the “kill list” because the shelter stated, “He has been noted to become uncomfortable with handling at times, especially when a person is reaching over him.” He was not labeled as aggressive and no health issues.

Julie Carner, proud foster mom to Pitties, posted, “I’M A GOOD BOY, I WOULD HAVE LOVED THAT NEW BABY! – PLEASE HELP ME, I DONT WANT TO DIE … By all accounts he is a just about perfect – friendly and outgoing, loves to play with his ball toys along with squeaky toys, house-trained, he knows commands sit, stay and come in SPANISH, if he pulls on the leash he will slow down when told to, no guarding issues.”

The post caught the attention of Olena Kagui while riding the subway with her husband. Usually she has to pass the sad images, but something about the dog’s sad eyes begging for help made her stop. Kagui said, “I started bawling when I saw that no one in the comments said they could take him,” Kagui said. “My husband noticed me crying, read the post and said, ‘We can’t get a dog right now.’”

Instead of giving up, Kagui convinced her husband to foster Smiley. She immediately reached out and found out that Pound Hounds Res-Q, a local rescue group, was working on rescuing Smiley from the shelter but needed a foster. That is where Kagui and her husband came in.

Smiley was neutered and then headed to his new foster home. At first, he was very nervous and shy. “He drank some water and it was … clear that he was house-trained, [and] knew not to jump on the bed or to chew anything except for his toys. But he wouldn’t settle down or look at me all day,” recalls Kagui.

The betrayed pup needed time to trust humans again. After a few days, he started to warm up and showed more affection. With some helpful tips on a harness and walking, they brought Smiley to a park with other dogs. “He was much calmer, pulled less and loved being surrounded by dogs and people.”

The couple quickly fell in love with Smiley and have decided to adopt him. “Smiley already feels like part of our family,” Kagui said. “It doesn’t take long for a foster dog to make their way into your heart. Our home would already feel empty without him here.”

She advocates for scared shelter dogs by posting, “Smiley is proof that all shelter dogs deserve a second chance and even if they have issues at the shelter, they might be completely fine outside of a stressful environment!”

The young dog named Rocco was hunched over and shaking like a leaf in the back of a kennel at Dallas Animal Services. His family abandoned him there and he did not know why. His sad eyes looked up asking ‘why am I here?’ to anyone who walked by. A shelter can be very stressful with all the unfamiliar smells, noises, and people.

A woman visiting the shelter noticed Rocco trembling in fear, so she took a video and posted it online in hopes that a rescue group would take in the gentle dog. Preethi Pillaipakkam, a foster through DFW German Shepherd Rescue, saw the video and immediately went to the shelter to rescue Rocco.

“The shelter is certainly not the environment for a dog like Rocco,” Pillaipakkam said. “He was very timid and scared to get into the car. He even hid beneath the seat in the car. He was pacing a bit and seemed very stressed.”

Rocco was underweight, weighing only 60 pounds. Pillaipakkam took Rocco home to relax and come out of his shell. At first, Rocco was very timid and confused as to where he was. Slowly, with the help of another German Shepherd in the home, Rocco started to play with toys.

“This is a giant step for Rocco who had completely shut down,” posted Pillaipakkam to an Instagram page made just for Rocco.

Hundreds of applications came pouring in for Rocco after his shelter video went viral. A lucky woman was chosen to be Rocco’s new mom. He will spend his days playing with another dog and cuddling with his new family. His new mom took over his Instagram page, so be sure to continue to follow it for updates on Rocco.

Any dogs that are admitted can only remain five days at the shelter according to a city ordinance. If individuals or rescue organizations say that they want to care for the dogs, the timeline may be extended.

The City Of Colorado City Animal Control went on Facebook to show pictures and asked people to help save the lives of those dogs who were at risk.

“UPDATE- SHELTER IS FULL. All of these babies have until Monday to find homes, otherwise, they will be euthanized. Please consider adopting this holiday season and saving a soul.”

You can see the desperation in the dogs’ eyes.

There is only room for 10 dogs at this particular shelter.

City Police Chief Charles Rice gave an interview and said that the dogs would probably benefit from having more than five days to find a suitable home.

Nobody is sure if it was the Facebook post, the pictures or just the kindhearted nature of some people but all of the dogs were rescued.

“According to Police Chief Charles Rice, all of the remaining dogs now have foster homes or are scheduled to be adopted. The last dog is scheduled to leave Friday morning. We appreciate everyone helping us to clean out the shelter and find forever homes for these babies.”

Even though things turned out good this time, people were questioning why this is an ongoing issue. Shannon Buswell is one of those individuals who responded.

“I would hope that Colorado City would consider changing their policies regarding euthanization, and be receptive going forward to the support that has been offered by all the kind folks posting here, so maybe this situation doesn’t have to happen again.”

Another Facebook user, Cheryl Remington had something similar to say:

“Is there any chance that the city ordinance can be changed? 5 days isn’t much time and we all can agree that animals aren’t disposable. I’m so happy that they are all safe now.”

These stories show both a positive view because of the rescue but they also can be negative due to the nature of euthanasia.

It is reported that the no-kill movement is seeing some growth.

“Shelters increasingly use data to direct their resources, and they collaborate with a growing network of rescue groups and volunteers to fill in the gaps.”

Something else that helps is spaying and neutering.

Apparently, Bludau was reporting on a Lab Mix that had been left chained to the shelter’s fence. Bludau informed the audience watching that she wasn’t going to leave the dog until someone arrived at the shelter. Naturally, Dr. White immediately raced to the scene.

The dog that had been tied up was very friendly – wagging her tail as the news crew approached her. No one knew just how much help she was actually going to need from Dr. White.

As soon as Dr. White arrived on the scene he took the dog in for a routine exam. They were all shocked to discover that she was actually heavily pregnant with a large litter of puppies who were due at any moment. In fact, she was so pregnant that her round belly was hitting the floor!

Dr. White then made the call to bring her home with him in order to keep an eye on her until she delivered her puppies.

“I decided I wasn’t going to leave her there any longer, and I took her home,” White said. “I didn’t want her to stay up there in that condition. I hate for animals to give birth in a shelter situation.”

In honor of the news reporter who refused to leave her side, Dr. White named the abandoned dog Janelle. After taking her home, Janelle settled in, showing her appreciation for her foster parents with lots of cuddles – big belly and all. And as everyone already anticipated, it was a short a few days after arriving at Dr. White’s, that Janelle began exhibiting signs of distress – indicating she was going to be going into labor.

She started having contractions around 9 at night. Dr. White and his wife knew they would be in for a long night. “My wife and I stayed up with her all night assisting in each delivery,” White said.

“At 3:36 a.m., [puppy] number 10 was born, and we thought that was it, but number 11 was born at 6:05 a.m. It was a long night for me, my wife and Janelle.”

Everything went well and Dr. White was able to happily report that Janelle and the puppies are doing well. Janelle is a great mom and she keeps a very clean “den” for her puppies.

Shelter workers will likely tell you that black dogs, as well as black cats, will not get adopted from the shelter as readily as other dogs and they are more likely to be euthanized. There are some studies that show the opposite is true but since there is not any data pointing toward the scientific facts, I would be likely to trust the people who actually see it for themselves, the workers at the shelters.

What Exactly Is Black Dog Syndrome?

Black dog syndrome is the tendency that people have of not adopting black dogs so they are more likely to be euthanized. Shelter workers will often point toward this factor although there have not been any studies that prove it or show it to be false.

There was a study in 1998 that looked into 1468 dogs at a local Humane Society that were up for adoption. The study did show that black coats did play a role in whether the dog got adopted or not. The general manager at the Los Angeles Animal Services looked into 30,046 dogs that were adopted over a 12 month period around 2008. He found that dogs who were black or mostly black were adopted more frequently than dogs of other colors. Obviously, more research needs to be done.

There is also Henry, a black Labrador who was in a Fort Worth animal shelter in 2014. The dog became a local hero, helping them to raise $1 million to cover some of the cost of the shelter. The reason why he was selected is that he was a big black dog, something they thought led to low adaptability, even though he was a Labrador.

What Leads to BDS?

Although nobody is really sure why black dogs may be adopted less frequently, there are some theories on the subject. Some cultures may feel as if black dogs are representing evil, typically because of what is seen on television, in literature or on the silver screen. For example, in the Harry Potter series, he saw his Uncle Sirius’ animagus and was initially shaken by it. It just happened to be a large black dog, named Padfoot.

Many films and television shows will also portray black dogs as being mean and aggressive. When a dog is growling or acting aggressively, it is more likely to be a Rottweiler or Doberman than any other dog.

Even if you were to put the superstitions or what gets into our subconscious from different forms of entertainment aside, there may be another issue associated with black dogs. Because of the color of their face, it is difficult to see their expression. Perhaps that is why it is sometimes recommended that you use props when taking pictures of dark-colored dogs to make the photographs more interesting.

What Is the Solution?

Animal shelters try to get around the issue by taking pictures and helping to bring out the personality of the animal on social media. Videos often are part of doing so.

If you do happen to be looking into adopting a dog, however, there is something that you can do. When at the shelter, pay attention to the darker color dogs. If the personality is right, by all means, look at the other dogs but at least give them a running chance.

There are millions of dogs and cats in shelters waiting for someone to come in and choose them. However, some are on a time clock which is known as ‘death row’ at shelters. Each of those pets have a certain date that they need to be adopted by or the shelter will euthanize them.

Meet Mocha, a one-year-old Pit bull mix, who was dumped at Rowan County Animal Shelter in Salisbury, North Carolina. She was surrendered with another dog by her heartless owner, through no fault of her own. The shelter set a date of November 1 for Mocha and if she was not adopted by then she would be euthanized.

The terrified pup would tremble with fear in her crate and potential adopters would pass her by. She arrived covered in fleas and paralyzed by fear. One of the shelter’s volunteers, Albina Albiie Chanel, wanted to show Mocha that not all humans are bad. She was heartbroken at the state Mocha was in and wanted to give her a fighting chance at finding a family.

“You know, every day we deal with cruelty and evil done by humans. This sweet girl broke my heart. Owner surrender at that. She is a skeleton, covered in fleas, she shakes constantly and doesn’t even want to get up to walk. Talk about a broken soul. Some days I hate humans so much. Hang in there Mocha baby. She’s seen so much evil in just her 1 year of life,” wrote Albina.

She decided to write a letter from Mocha and post it on Facebook. It said, “Dear humans,
As I sit here on death row totally defeated, I hope my puppies will at least have a better life than I did. I sit here, I am so scared just waiting to be euthanized. You see, I am only a year old. I haven’t had a good life at all..”

It went on to say, “I shake so much in my kennel that people just walk past me. I cant help it tho, humans haven’t been nice to me. I am so skinny but I love to eat. I tried to be brave for my pictures today but I couldn’t even really get up. I tried tho and I think the girls that were with me knew I was trying.. I got brave enough to even take a treat later.”

The heartbreaking letter concluded with, “I was surrendered to the shelter by my owner with my friend.. please consider adopting me and giving me a chance at a good life. But please know I may take a while to warm up because I’m just so scared. You can find me in kennel #5.
Love,
Mocha”.

The post went viral with thousands of people commenting and sharing. Thankfully, a kind person heard about Mocha and went to the shelter to rescue her. Albina updated the post to tell everyone that Mocha and her sister that came in with her are safe.

Albina wrote her own letter to Mocha after she was rescued. She wrote, “Dear Mocha, I sat with you and wrote a letter for the whole world to see. And they did. Happy 2nd chance sweet girl. May you finally be loved and taken care of forever .

Best wishes my darling.
I love you and will remember you always.”

Leslie walked into Asheville Humane Society and asked, “Which two dogs have been here the longest, with the most special needs? I’m here to take them both home with me.” The staff was shocked but delighted and immediately two dogs came to mind – Brutus and Samantha.

Brutus was surrendered by his family to be euthanized, but instead the shelter took him in. He has been patiently waiting since March for someone to see how special he is. He is 13-years-old and has severe separation anxiety, which may stem from his family abandoning him.

“One of our staff members let him have a little vacation in her office, so he would have someone to be around instead of being in his kennel,” Meredith Pitcairn, the shelter’s communications and digital fundraising manager, told Today. “She had a hankering for something out of the vending machine, so she took him with her — and that’s when Leslie walked in the door! She came in saying that she wanted to adopt the two longest-staying dogs that had special needs, and the staff member was like ‘Here you go! Here’s Brutus!’”

Samantha, known as Sam, was also surrendered in poor health back in December 2018. The staff treated her masses on her skin and with a special diet her hair started to grow back. A family came forward to adopt her but sadly it did not work out. She returned to the shelter in June.

Leslie has a heart of gold and has taken in over 50 senior and special needs dogs. Her three-story home and 2-acre fenced in yard has been home to many senior dogs. While she understands that she may not have years with the dogs, she wants each to feel loved and spend their last days in a loving home. She adopted both Brutus and Sam that day.

“As she walked them to the car, Leslie talked softly to these two sweet souls, with their creaky joints and grey muzzles, who have been through so much hardship. She told both Sam and Brutus that they now had a family to love them for the rest of their days. And Leslie assured Brutus especially, who panics when left behind, that he would never spend another moment alone ever again,” posted the shelter.

Everyone was crying tears of joy. The staff said goodbye to the sweet dogs and wished them well. Leslie was fighting back tears as she said, “I am glad to give them a home for the last couple years of their lives. They give so much love back.”

The family is still grieving the loss of seven senior pets that they adopted and each loss is heartbreaking. However, they know that other senior dogs are in need of a loving home, so they continue to adopt.

Leslie updated the shelter that Brutus and Sam were settling in nicely and are best friends. She returned to the shelter to give an update and to adopt another senior dog, 13-year-old Schnauzer mix named Lily. “The summer months are so stressful for our staff because we have so many animals coming in … something like this happening, especially this time of year, really gave all of us a boost that there are good people out there,” said Heather Hayes, marketing manager for the shelter.
